Remember that awkward stage in your life when you were transitioning from a pre-teen to a teenager? This Mom from Ohio didn’t want her daughter feeling insecure so she did something about it.
Working full-time didn’t stop Stephanie Skylar [mom] from making a positive influence on her daughter’s life – even when she wasn’t around. She began leaving these hand-written notes in her Skye’s [daughter] lunchbox as a way to add her voice to her daughter’s day without coming across as a preachy.
Once Skye could start looking forward to the inevitable letter in her lunchbox, her and her Mom agreed to store the old letters in a shoebox. They decorated the shoebox together with photos and signatures before being sealed with wax once the letters stopped.
Skye recently dug up all of her old notes and to base her master thesis in visual communications on her Mom’s old tradition. Her thesis question: “Can my story inspire others to share their own.” You can find the website she created at Advice From My Mom.
Skye hopes that her project will cause other Moms to start handwriting letters to their daughters:
“At the time my mom wrote these, she didn’t think she was doing anything heroic or life-changing for me – she was just trying to make some sort of small impact on my daily life,” says Skye. “I believe in the power of the hand-written note no matter how old you are. We’re so glued to screens all day that when someone takes the time to write you, it really means something and I think it sticks in our brains, whether we realize it or not.”

How cute is this? Is it enough to inspire you to start writing your own letters to your kids? Do you already have a tradition like this?
